Improving Operational Performance

International shipping accounts for around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To meet IMO's emission reduction targets—20% by 2030, 70% by 2040, and net-zero by 2050—the industry must improve operational efficiency and adopt alternative fuels. In response, IMO, flag states, and the EU are enforcing emission taxes to drive investment in decarbonization technologies.

The landscape of efficiency-improving solutions continues to expand, but so far, no single solution stands out as the universally optimal. Each technology can offer its incremental savings, but achieving meaningful results requires thorough understanding and careful consideration before making investments.

To meet the challenges ahead, Fram Marine can act as an independent third party, to assess vessels in their current state, provide performance analysis and full in-service testing to measure the effect of technologies installed. Beyond the assessments, Fram Marine offers feasibility studies, advisory and project execution services to implement solutions based on findings to improve the performance of your vessel or fleet.

One technology which is showing promising potential for efficiency gains is Air Lubrication Systems (ALS). The principal effect of the system is that a layer of air bubbles (large or small) is blown out through nozzles installed along the ship bottom, creating a layer of air along the ship, reducing the frictional resistance.

The efficiency gain in installing ALS systems is expected to be in the region of single-digit percentages, which means that identifying the savings can be challenging in a complex system with lots of variables and high data scatter. Special attention must be paid to providing high quality data as a basis for statistical analysis. In-depth knowledge of the ALS- system, detailed planning and effective communication with the crew is also vital to document the performance gains from an installed system. Fram Marine can assess layout of the installed ALS system, provide guidance on in-service testing procedures and analyze performance data to identify net savings of the system for ALS on vs ALS off cases.
