One technology which is showing promising potential for efficiency gains is Air Lubrication Systems (ALS). The principal effect of the system is that a layer of air bubbles (large or small) is blown out through nozzles installed along the ship bottom, creating a layer of air along the ship, reducing the frictional resistance.

The efficiency gain in installing ALS systems is expected to be in the region of single-digit percentages, which means that identifying the savings can be challenging in a complex system with lots of variables and high data scatter. Special attention must be paid to providing high quality data as a basis for statistical analysis. In-depth knowledge of the ALS- system, detailed planning and effective communication with the crew is also vital to document the performance gains from an installed system. Fram Marine can assess layout of the installed ALS system, provide guidance on in-service testing procedures and analyze performance data to identify net savings of the system for ALS on vs ALS off cases.
